Mommy Dead and Dearest

Where watched: Home

Who with: Alone, but my blinds were open so maybe some of my neighbors watched a little, depending on their nosiness.

As my friends who recommended this documentary to me had put so perfectly, this movie was fucked. This was one of those true crime documentaries, much like Making a Murderer, The Jinx, and The Keepers. This genre has really taken off in the past couple years and it isn't hard to see why. They are captivating as shit.

Much like Bambi, this movie didn't waste any time killing off the mother of the main character. More like Mommy Dead and Deerest. After showing the real life tapes of daughter Gypsy getting questioned about the death of her mother Dee Dee, the movie goes into the entire story. Turns out DeeDee was not only an over protective mother, but she was also a crazy bitch. She had a disease called Munchausen Syndrome by proxy. This means that she just made up a bunch of illnesses that her daughter Gypsy had so that people would feel sorry for her. So she took Gypsy out of school, made her use a wheel chair because she claimed she couldn't walk, made her use a fucking feeding tube, and told everyone that she was mentally retarded. However, Gypsy was a fraud (as most gypsies often are).

Gypsy eventually got tired, and as most children do she decided to rebel a little bit. We all know the feeling, moms can get irritating. Whether they are making you take the trash out, asking you to clean your room, or sticking a feeding tube in you even though you are perfectly capable of eating, we have all gotten a little sick of our parents at some point. The way I chose to rebel was to ignore calls and text messages, and maybe stay out a little later than I was suppose to. I even snuck out every once in awhile. The way Gypsy fought the power was finding an online boyfriend who was obsessed with BDSM and convincing him to come murder her mom and then run away to Wisconsin. Different strokes for different folks.

This documentary has a happy ending, I guess. DeeDee is dead, like she absolutely should be, and Gypsy is in prison, which she absolutely should be. My main issue with this is HOW THE HELL DID DEEDEE NOT SEE THIS COMING??? If a mom is this crazy and overbearing over her child where they have a whole charade set up that she fucking keeps her inside all of the time in a wheel chair, how could she have not been checking her computer and text messages? Normal parents snoop on their kids online. This bitch was smart enough to give different family histories at different doctors so she wouldn't get caught, but she wasn't checking out her daughters facebook page? If DeeDee was like any other parent in America she would have seen that her daughter was on an online dating site, seen the text messages and said "You should probably not be sending this stranger weird ass BDSM pictures of yourself. Oh, and what was that part about him coming here to rape and murder me? That doesn't seem safe." Big time missed opportunity to live.

Favorite Scene: Young Gypsy jumped off like a 4 foot tall ledge into snow trying to make a homemade Jackass. Hilarious.

Overall Score: 60/100. Real interesting and everything, but it was a documentary so it doesn't get as high a score. Also, didn't like how they tried to portray this little psycho murderer as a victim.
